Meet The Artist
Katharine Watson
Katharine is an artist and printmaker based in Portland, ME. She works primarily with linocuts and loves the bold, imperfect look of printmaking. She is inspired by colors and patterns from nature as well as vintage textiles, and you can find her working away in her studio or planting in her garden.
Where do you live? Where do you work? I live and work in Portland, Maine and my studio is in a converted barn behind my house.
Describe a typical day for you: I wake up, let my dog Olive out, make breakfast, then start my work day. I usually start with a meeting with my studio manager Violet where we talk about what we’re working on and what projects we have coming up, and make sure to catch up on all our local and celebrity gossip. Then I do a few hours of computer work: managing projects, answering emails, etc. If I am lucky I’ll have time to work on creative projects, but every day is different depending on what projects we have coming up and what time of year it is. After work I’ll often have dinner with friends or if it’s summer, head to the beach before sunset for a quick swim.
Name a book that you read recently and loved: I loved The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai. When it was over I desperately wanted to Google the characters because I really believed they were real.
Favorite snack: Tea and chocolate
Favorite color combination: This is always changing but I always love coral red with light pink, lilac and teal, hot pink with maroon, there are too many to list!
