Wedding registries fill up with things the couple already picked out: a stand mixer, good knives, towels in a color they chose themselves. A personalized blanket is one of the few gifts that arrives with something they didn't choose, their initials or their date, and it's usually still on the couch long after the knives have gone into a drawer.
Choosing one mostly comes down to what goes on it and how the personalization is made. The design and fiber matter too, but those are easier calls.

Is a blanket a good wedding gift?
Yes!! It's a super versatile gift, great utility, and more importantly, majority can be personalized so it's a 1 of 1 gift.
For example, a throw gets used every evening, it doesn't duplicate anything in the kitchen, and it suits a couple in a one-bedroom apartment as well as one that just bought a house. Their initials or wedding date knit into it make it the one they keep.
If the couple has a registry and you'd rather buy from it, that's a perfectly good choice. A blanket makes the most sense when you want to give something they'll know came from you, or when the registry has already been picked over.
What to put on a personalized wedding blanket
Our personalization fits up to 10 characters, and spaces and symbols count toward that. It's less room than it sounds. Two short first names fit, so Ana & Leo works at nine characters, while Matt & Jessica, at fourteen, doesn't. Most people choose one of these:
| What to knit | Example | Characters |
|---|---|---|
| Initials and year | A + R 2023 | 10 |
| Surname | MARTINEZ | 8 |
| Wedding date | 06.14.26 | 8 |
| Two short first names | ANA & LEO | 9 |
| A short word | HOME | 4 |
A surname works if you know which name the couple is using. If you aren't sure, initials or a date have no such problem, and the date is the detail most couples are gladdest to see years later.

Where the text goes is set by each design, so it always sits in a part of the pattern made to hold it. On Ceremony, initials and a year sit inside the heart at the center. On other designs the text runs along the top or the bottom edge. The product page for each design shows where it goes.
Knit-in vs. embroidered vs. printed personalization
Most personalized blankets are personalized after they're made: a finished blanket gets a name embroidered on top or printed onto its surface. Ours are knit with the name already in the design, all in one piece, so the letters are made from the same yarn as everything around them.

| Knit-in | Embroidered | Printed | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How it's made | Letters knit into the blanket as it's made | Thread stitched through a finished blanket | Ink or dye applied to the surface |
| How it looks | Same texture as the rest of the blanket | Raised thread, with stitching visible on the back | Flat, sitting on top of the fibers |
| After washing | Unchanged, since it's part of the knit | Can pucker or loosen over time | Can fade or crack over many washes |
| How it feels | Soft all over | Stiffer where the stitching is | Can feel slightly coated |
| Placement | Set by the design | Usually a corner or the center | Almost anywhere |
Embroidery does have one real advantage: it can go on almost any blanket, in almost any spot, with longer text. If you want both full names and the full date together, an embroidered blanket will fit more. Knit-in personalization gives up that flexibility for lettering that looks and wears like the rest of the blanket.
Choosing the design and fiber
A design matters more for a wedding gift than for a blanket you'd buy yourself, because it has to suit two people and a home you may never have seen. Our personalized wedding blankets come in three designs: Ceremony and Home Is Knit by Amelie Mancini, and Bugs in Love by Holsen Studio. Each is 50 by 60 inches and runs $195 to $300 depending on fiber, with personalization included.
For fiber, organic cotton and Egyptian cotton are comfortable year-round, which suits a couch that gets used every night. Extra-fine merino is warmer and heavier in the hand, which suits a colder climate or a bedroom. All of them are machine washable on cold. Our guide to the best fibers for a knit blanket covers the differences in more detail.

Personalized anniversary blankets
By the time of an anniversary, a couple knows what their life together looks like, so the gift that lands is usually the one that points back to where it started. The original wedding date, knit into a blanket, does that without needing a card to explain it.
Blankets also fit two of the traditional anniversary themes. The second anniversary is traditionally cotton and the seventh is wool, which makes an organic cotton or merino blanket a gift that follows the tradition without being obvious about it.

How much does a personalized blanket cost?
Ours run $195 to $300 depending on fiber, and personalization is included at no extra cost. Most personalized blankets sold online cost less because the name is printed or embroidered onto a blanket that was made in bulk, often from polyester fleece. What you pay for with a knit-in blanket is natural fiber, a design from an independent artist, and a blanket knit to order with the name already in it.
If the budget is tight, a printed or embroidered blanket is a perfectly reasonable gift. If you want the one that still looks the same after years of washing, knit-in is worth the difference.
When to order
Every Biquette blanket is knit to order, so a personalized one takes about the same time as any other, occasionally a little longer. Check the shipping estimate on the product page and leave some room before the date. If you're giving it from the registry, it can also arrive after the wedding. Gifts in the first few months are common, and a blanket that turns up after the thank-you cards is still welcome.
Frequently asked questions
Does personalization cost extra?
Not with Biquette! Names, initials or a date are knit into the design at no extra cost.
How many characters can I add?
Up to 10, including spaces and symbols. That fits initials and a year, a surname, a date, or two short first names.
Can I choose where the name goes?
Placement is set by each design, so the text always sits in a part of the pattern made to hold it. The product page shows where it goes.
Can I fit two full names?
Only if they're short. Ana & Leo fits; longer names usually don't. Initials and the wedding year are the most common choice.
Can I buy a wedding blanket without personalization?
Yes. Our wedding blankets and gifts collection includes designs without it.
Is a blanket a good anniversary gift?
Yes, especially for a second anniversary, which is traditionally cotton, or a seventh, which is traditionally wool.
